Old nautical chart on paper

The portolan was a nautical chart, handwritten or printed on a support in sheepskin or calfskin. “She combined three main elements: drawing, writing and measuring. That is to say an image, general or partial of the world, legends and instructions and finally measurable quantities. The map was constructed from a network of wind lines called rhumbs that radiated from compass roses. This canvas of lines served as the basis for the cartography.
